Alexa - a new poem - revised
Alexa, what time
is it
5:05 am
To early to get
up―impossible to sleep
I turn on a TV
The News, Create,
Roadkill, Turner
I can’t always
tell programs from commercials
Alexa, what time
is it
9:05 am
I missed Bob Ross
No painting today
Alexa turn on the
bedroom light
Out of bed
I brush and pee
Check my weight
Alexa is playing
the radio in the kitchen
Alexa turn off the
radio
I turn the lights
on and the TV
Check the
refrigerator
I get coffee and
leave the lights on
In my office, I
turn on my computer
Alexa, play some
music for me
Work eludes me
I play today’s NY
Times Games
My e-mails can
wait
Restless
I roam from room
to room
Alexa follows me
Playing different
music in each room
The house is
empty
In quiet, there
is no peace, no solitude
Only loneliness
Alexa play
something for me

WHAT DO YOU SEE - poem on 1 12 2025
WHAT
DO YOU SEE
What do you see
Your brown eyes so clouded
And filled with tears
Is it the death of a culture
Is it a past scared by violence and hatred
White colonials, bigotry, slavery and apartheid
Or is it the modern world
Unimagined possibilities
But an uncertain future
Perhaps it is all of these and more

Status in the natural world - a poem 1 8 2025
status in the natural world
Eagles, hawks, falcons
Killer whales, sharks, barracuda
Crocodiles, pythons, dragons
Lions, tigers, leopards
Polar bears, grizzly bears, wolves
What is it we feel about them
It isn’t fear
We admire them
First order carnivores
Apex predators
Ten thousand years ago
We were part of the club
Now we stand apart
Our brains and our technology
Has made us
Super predators
Yet we cannot soar with an eagle
Nor swim with a shark
We don’t see in the dark
And the only scent we smell
Is the stink of our garbage, and
The rot of our status in the natural world
